EyeCare with Dr Priscilia Imade: Nutrition and diet for children’s eye health

The FrontierThe FrontierSeptember 9, 2024 2451 Minutes read0

•Dr Priscilia Imade

Good vision is essential for a child’s development and academic success.

While regular eye examination and protective measures are important, nutrition plays a critical role in maintaining eye health.

A balanced diet rich in essential vitamins and nutrients can help prevent vision problems and support overall eye health in children.

KEY NUTRIENTS FOR EYE HEALTH

Vitamin A: Vital for maintaining a clear cornea and good night vision. It also plays a role in protecting the surface of the eye (cornea) and preventing dryness. Sources of vitamin A include, Carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, kale, and liver.

Vitamin C: An antioxidant that helps protect the eyes from damage caused by free radicals. It also supports the health of blood vessels in the eyes. Sources of vitamin C include, Oranges, strawberries, bell peppers, broccoli, and pineapples.

Vitamin E: Another powerful antioxidant that helps protect the eyes from oxidative damage. Sources include Nuts (such as almonds and sunflower seeds), spinach, and avocados.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Essential for visual development and retinal function. They also help reduce the risk of dry eyes. Sources include Fatty fish (such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines), flaxseeds, chia seeds, and walnuts.

Zinc: Important for the transport of Vitamin A from the liver to the retina to produce melanin, a protective pigment in the eyes. Sources include meat, shellfish, dairy products, beans, and nuts.

Lutein and Zeaxanthin: These carotenoids are found in high concentrations in the retina and help filter harmful high-energy blue wavelengths of light, protecting and maintaining healthy cells in the eyes. Sources include, green leafy vegetables (such as spinach and kale), corn, eggs, and orange peppers.
