REVEALED: Why Tinubu sacked education minister Mamman Tahir

The FrontierThe FrontierOctober 23, 2024 5931 Minutes read0

•Professor Mamman Tahir

As President Ahmed Tinubu announced a cabinet reshuffle leading to the sack of Professor Mamman Tahir, the Minster of Education and others, sources said Mamman’s sack was not unconnected with the uproar generated by the age limit controversy for candidates that are eligible to write the West African Senior School Certificate (WASSCE) an the National Examination Council (NECO) and NABTEB examinations.

Recall that efforts by the former minister to clarify the controversy generated by the age limit saga did not go down well with many Nigerians that considered the explanations and guidelines as mere face saving measures, reports Daily Independent.

Mamman Tahir was appointed as Nigeria’s 35th Minister of Education on August 12, 2023 .

Mamman who presided over the Ministry for 1 year and 2 months succeeded Malam Adamu Adamu.

Mamman/Baze University Law Programme Saga

Shortly after his assumption of office as Minister, Nigerians blamed Mamman, who was a former Vice Chancellor of the Baze University, Abuja, for his alleged roles played in the university’s flagrant violation of admission quota for its law faculty.

Recall the Council of Legal Education (CLE), the regulatory body for law education in Nigeria imposed a five-year ban on admission of students into the Law Faculty of the institution, citing a breach of strict admission rules.

The council accused the university of violating its approved admission quota of 50 students per session.

The temporary ban followed the review of the accreditation panel to the university and was contained in a statement signed by the CLE’s acting Secretary and Director of Administration, Aderonke Osho.

Nigerians that took to social media knocked Mamman, alleging him of complicity and overseeing the university’s violation of the admission quota while serving as the institution vice-chancellor.

Mr Mamman also served as the Director General of the Nigerian Law School (NLS) from 2005 to 2013.

Meanwhile, Dr. Morufu Olatunji Alausa, former Minister State for Health will now manage the Ministry of Education as Nigeria’s 36th Minister of Education.
