Maulud: Tension as security forces disrupt Shi’ite gathering in Abuja

The FrontierThe FrontierFebruary 20, 2025 2011 Minutes read0

•Shi’ites

Security operatives have disrupted a religious gathering of Shi’a Muslims in Abuja, leading to significant tension among residents.

The incident occurred during the Maulud celebration, which marks the birthday of Imam Mahdi, an important event for Shi’ites worldwide, including those in Nigeria, reports Vanguard.

The Islamic movement, led by Sayyid Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, had organised the event at the Nigeria Airforce Investments Limited venue in the nation’s capital.

Shortly after the programme commenced, a convoy of approximately 50 trucks, carrying heavily armed personnel from the Nigerian Police Force, the Nigerian Army, and the Department of State Services, DSS, cordoned off the location. The operation was led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Magawata.

The security forces interrupted the peaceful gathering, insisting that attendees disperse or face forceful action. They justified the disruption by claiming that the organisers had not obtained permission from the FCT Commissioner of Police.

However, the Shi’ites dismissed this assertion, arguing that it contradicted established legal precedents affirming that police authorisation was not required for peaceful assembly.

They expressed serious concerns about the violation of their religious and civil rights.

Speaking on behalf of the Islamic sect, yesterday, Prof. Abdullahi Danladi, Coordinator of its Resource Forum, called for accountability from President Bola Tinubu and his security leadership.

He stated that members of the sect felt traumatised by the aggressive tactics employed by security personnel, which they claimed resulted in both financial and social harm.

Consequently, the group demanded an end to the disruption of their religious activities and called for the prosecution of those responsible for violating their rights.

The Shi’ites reaffirmed their commitment to continue their religious observances despite the alleged harassment.
