Fire guts 2 popular Lagos markets, goods worth millions of naira reduced to ashes

A midnight inferno ravaged Ladipo market in Mushin and Owode Onirin market along Ikorodu Road, Lagos, leaving behind a trail of destruction and goods worth millions of naira reduced to ashes.

Eyewitnesses reported the fire started at Ladipo market around 1a.m., quickly spreading through numerous shops and warehouses stocked with mechanical tools, vehicle spare parts, motorcycles, and household electrical appliances, reports The Nation.

Fortunately, no casualties were reported in either incident, as confirmed by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, which successfully extinguished the flames by 6 a.m.

Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed that emergency teams from Isolo, Bolade, and Alausa Fire Stations worked tirelessly to combat the fire at Ladipo Market.

Despite difficulties in accessing some of the affected areas, the firefighters managed to contain the blaze, preventing it from spreading to nearby properties and businesses.

Another fire broke out at Owode Onirin Market along Ikorodu road almost at the same time, impacting several shops that sold metallic materials.

Firefighters from Alausa and Ikorodu Fire Stations responded quickly, bringing the situation under control by 5 a.m.

Adeseye assured the public that investigations into the causes of both fires would be carried out once the firefighting operations reached the damping-down stage.

“Thankfully, no casualties were recorded in either incident. The causes of the fires will be determined once firefighting operations move to the next phase,” she said.
