Liverpool backing off, Man Utd now closer to signing Xavi Simons – Report

•Xavi Simons

Man Utd under Ruben Amorim might still be in the running for the Europa League this season but their focus would be on building a winning squad for Ruben Amorim in the summer. The upcoming transfer window could be crucial for the Red Devils’ future.

Amorim does not have a well-rounded squad at his disposal and it will come as no surprise to see them clear out deadwood from the current roster and try and find funds to bring in players that the Portuguese tactician deems fit for his project, reports AFP.

Last month, it emerged that Liverpool were set to beat Man Utd to the signature of talented RB Leipzig attacker, Xavi Simons, who will be allowed to leave the German club if any interested team was to put in an offer of £80million.

However, now as per Caught Offside, with Mohamed Salah closing in on signing a new deal at the Anfield-based club, Liverpool are moving further away from Xavi Simons and Man Utd are now a step closer to signing the La Masia graduate.

It is understandable that Liverpool do not want to spend a significant chunk of money on a player when Salah is set to stay at the club and would be better off investing this amount elsewhere. However, this could turn out to be Man Utd’s gain.

A versatile attacker

Xavi Simons was touted to be one of the biggest prospects in football when he was coming through the La Masia ranks but his career stalled considerably since his move to PSG.

In recent years however, he has rediscovered his magic and would be an excellent addition to Ruben Amorim’s system.

The Dutchman is extremely versatile and can play anywhere across the front line in Amorim’s line-up. He also has the ability to play further deeper in midfield but it is important to identify a profile into which Man Utd would like to use Simons.

For the German side, he has mainly featured in the No.10 role and this term, so far, he has directly contributed in 12 goals in 20 Bundesliga appearances.

The fee that RB Leipzig are asking for is quite significant and if Man Utd were to sign him, they would be allocating a significant chunk of their budget to the Dutch attacker. Let’s wait and see if the Red Devils make a move for the youngster in the upcoming summer.
