Sallah: How Mokwa flood has affected price of ram in Lagos — Sellers

The FrontierThe FrontierJune 5, 2025 1551 Minutes read0

•Ram sellers Hamza Saidu and Shehu Usman

Hours to the 2025 Eid Al-Adha celebrations, cattle dealers at the Kara Cattle Market in the Isheri area of Lagos State have attributed the increase in the prices of rams to the flood that rocked Mokwa Local Government Area (LGA) in Niger State.

Mokwa was hit by a devastating flood following torrential rains that began in the late hours of Wednesday, May 28, 2025 and continued into Thursday, reports Channels TV.

Over 200 bodies have been recovered with thousands displaced by the disaster.

A Special Assistant to the Managing Director of the Kara Cattle Market in Isheri Lagos, Hamza Saidu, disclosed this to our correspondent yesterday.

He said, “The Mokwa flood has affected many lives. A lot of trailers conveying cattles are stuck in Mokwa due to the flood. They cannot come into Lagos. “The ones that are supposed to go to the north to bring cattle to Lagos cannot go because of the Mokwa flood. This has led to an increase in the price of cattle this year.”

Also, the Chairman of Mile 12 International Market in Lagos, Shehu Usman, corroborated Saidu’s stance, noting that drivers have to use a different route, causing extra time and expenses.

Usman also lamented the poor patronage this year due to the price of cattle.

“Most of our trucks were trapped in Mokwa where that incident happened so they had to divert to another road to come to Lagos which has taken a long time.

“You can see that there’s no much ram in the market and there are no buyers.”

The devastating flood collapsed Mokwa Bridge in Niger State — a gateway between the agrarian north and the buying south, leaving hundreds of trucks conveying various items trapped.
