Oba Akran of Badagry is dead

The FrontierThe FrontierJanuary 12, 2026 1271 Minutes read0

•Late Akran of Badagry

Paramount ruler of Badagry in Lagos, His Majesty De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, the Akran of Badagry, has passed away at the age of 90.

His passage has thrown the ancient city of Badagry Kingdom into mourning, marking the end of an era, reports Daily Trust.

For decades, he stood as the custodian of Badagry’s rich heritage, a symbol of unity, wisdom, and royal authority, and a towering traditional voice within the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs.

Beyond Badagry, his reign earned him reverence across Lagos State and Nigeria, where he was widely acknowledged as a monarch of intellect, culture, and uncommon dignity, whose influence transcended palace walls.

As the ancient town bows its head in grief, the nation joins Badagry in honouring a royal father whose footprints on history remain indelible.

The late monarch reigned for almost five decades.

Born in 1936, the Akran was a journalist who ascended the throne of his ancestors on April 23, 1977. Throughout his long reign, he was regarded as a symbol of unity and a respected voice for the Ogu people.

He was widely regarded as a great lover of his people who brought peace and encouraged community development throughout the Badagry area.
