2027: Christian clerics back INEC chairman, reject sack call by Shari’ah council

Christian clerics operating under the umbrella of the National Christian Alliance for Good Governance in Nigeria have rejected calls to remove the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, describing the demand as undemocratic and ill-advised ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The group faulted the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria, warning that such pressure could undermine public confidence in the electoral process and deepen divisions at a time when national unity is critical, reports Vanguard.

The position was contained in a statement signed by the National President of the Alliance, Dean Rev. Ozumba Emmanuel Nicodemus.

Responding directly to the Shari’ah Council, the Alliance cautioned against using religious platforms to demand the removal of the INEC chairman, noting that the move could inflame tensions rather than strengthen democracy.

“We view this position as undemocratic and lacking a substantive basis,” the Alliance said.

The clerics stressed that calls for drastic actions against the leadership of the electoral umpire risk creating unnecessary discord among Nigerians of different faiths and backgrounds.

“Utilizing your esteemed platform to call for such drastic measures can create unnecessary division among the peace-loving citizens of our nation,” they added.

The Alliance also expressed support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to appoint Professor Amupitan as INEC chairman, describing the move as timely and beneficial to the country’s electoral system. It said the chairman’s background as a constitutional lawyer positions him to strengthen transparency and fairness in election administration.

“We firmly believe that his wealth of experience as a constitutional lawyer will significantly contribute to strengthening our electoral processes,” the clerics said.

Emphasising the importance of insulating INEC from external pressure, the group said the commission’s independence must be protected to guarantee credible elections in 2027 and beyond.

“The integrity and independence of INEC must be upheld, ensuring that it is allowed to function without undue influence or pressure from any group,” they noted.

The Alliance concluded and called on the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria to reconsider its position and adopt a more collaborative approach in the interest of democracy and national cohesion.

“We urge the Council to reconsider its stance and support a collaborative approach that upholds the democratic values we all cherish,” Ozumba said.
