EyeCare with Dr Priscilia Imade: Prevention strategies for Myopia in children

The FrontierThe FrontierOctober 30, 2023 5071 Minutes read0

Myopia is an eye problem that can be inherited so prevention is a bit difficult but you can aim to control the risk factors and vision deterioration.

Some of these activities include:

Encouraging outdoor activities:

Imagine outdoor time as a superpower for your child’s eyes. When they play outside, it’s like they’re charging up their visual strength. The sun’s natural light contains a magic ingredient: vitamin D. This vitamin helps keep their eyes healthy and can lower the risk of myopia. Encourage your child to spend at least 2 hours a day playing outdoors, just like a superhero recharging their powers.

The 20-20-20 Rule for screen time:

Picture screens, like phones and computers, as villains that can harm your child’s eyes. To protect them, introduce the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes of screen time, your child should take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away. It’s like a shield against the screen’s harmful effects.

Proper lighting and ergonomics:

Think of proper lighting as a spotlight on your child’s workspace. Ensure they have good lighting when they read, study, or do homework. It’s like giving them a well-lit stage to perform on. A comfortable chair and desk at the right height are like custom-made costumes – they ensure your child’s posture is perfect, protecting their back and eyes.

Balanced nutrition and eye-friendly foods:

Choose foods like carrots and leafy greens as snacks and daily meals for your children. They contain vitamins and nutrients that are like a secret weapon for your child’s eyes. Ensure your child eats a balanced diet with plenty of these eye-friendly foods. It’s like feeding your child’s vision with super strength.

These prevention strategies are like building a fortress around your child’s eyes, defending them from the risks of myopia. By encouraging outdoor play, managing screen time wisely, optimizing their study environment, and providing a balanced diet, you’re giving your child the best chance at maintaining clear vision and healthy eyes.

Remember, prevention is the best medicine, and these strategies are simple yet powerful tools to protect your child’s eyes from myopia.
