After 8-year time off, Genevieve Nnaji returns to screen in BBC Studios drama series ‘Wahala’

Star actress Genevieve Nnaji is set to make her acting comeback in ‘Wahala’, a six-part drama series produced by BBC Studios.

The thriller, adapted from Nikki May’s debut novel of the same name, is written by BAFTA-nominated screenwriter Theresa Ikoko and will stream on BBC iPlayer and broadcast on BBC One.

BBC announced the casting on Instagram, revealing a strong female-led ensemble that includes Adelayo Adedayo, Deborah Ayorinde, Cush Jumbo, Susan Wokoma, and Nnaji.

The series centres on four Nigerian-British women living in present-day London as they navigate friendship, careers, love, and family while confronting dark secrets from their past.

It follows three close friends, Simi, Boo and Ronke, played by Adedayo, Jumbo and Wokoma respectively, whose bond is tested by the arrival of Isobel, portrayed by Deborah Ayorinde.

Producers describe the drama as an exploration of betrayal, buried truths, and the consequences of long-hidden secrets.

The project marks one of Nnaji’s most significant on-screen roles in years.

The actress and filmmaker last drew international attention with her 2018 directorial debut, Lionheart, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and became the first Nigerian film acquired by Netflix in 2019.

She has since maintained a relatively low public profile, heightening anticipation for her return.

Wahala, which translates to ‘trouble‘ in Nigerian Pidgin, is produced by Firebird Pictures, a BBC Studios company. Filming is currently underway.
