Premier League win: Enugu governor splashes land, N100 million on Rangers International players

The FrontierThe FrontierJune 4, 2026 332 Minutes read0

•Rangers International F. C. team with Governor Mbah

Enugu State governor, Peter Mbah, has announced a plot of land in Enugu for each Rangers International F. C. player, and a cash reward of ₦100 million for the team for winning the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title.

Mbah also announced the sum of ₦50 million for the management, and additional plots of land for the general manager, secretary, coach, and assistant coach of the club.

The governor, who disclosed this on his X handle yesterday after meeting with the team in Enugu, said that the team earned the reward.

“What a season. What a team. They brought the trophy home again in style.

“As a token of that appreciation, I announced a plot of land in Enugu for each player, a cash reward of ₦100 million for the team, ₦50 million for the management, and additional plots of land for the general manager, secretary, coach, and assistant coach. They have earned it, every bit of it.

“This is what pride in Enugu looks like. This is what belief in our own looks like. And today, I am truly happy,” Mbah stated.

Rangers International F. C. won their ninth NPFL title after defeating Ikorodu City F.C. 2-1 on Sunday in the 2025/2026 season.

‎The victory at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena drew them level with Enyimba F.C. as the most successful clubs in NPFL history.

‎The victory capped one of the most dramatic final-day title races in recent NPFL history, with ‎the Flying Antelopes ultimately finishing ahead of Rivers United, who defeated Katsina United 3-0 but fell just short in the championship race.

‎‎Both Rangers and Rivers United will represent Nigeria in next season’s CAF Champions League, while Shooting Stars S.C. secured a CAF Confederation Cup spot after finishing third.

‎‎Rangers’ triumph marked another landmark achievement for the Coal City club and further cemented their place among Nigeria’s football elite.

The club’s victory attracted praise from President Bola Tinubu.

Tinubu, in his message, recalled the club’s dominant era in the 1970s and 1980s, when they were one of Africa’s most formidable teams, during which Rangers won multiple domestic league and FA Cup titles, reached the finals of the African Cup of Champions Clubs in 1975, and went on to win the African Cup Winners’ Cup in 1977—achievements that cemented their legacy on the continental stage.

“As one of the oldest clubs in Nigeria, Rangers have produced some of the nation’s finest football players who went on to make the country proud on the global stage. I am proud of their achievement,” the president was quoted as saying in a statement by his media aide, Bayo Onanuga.

Tinubu also attributed part of the club’s success to sustained investment in youth development and sporting infrastructure.
