Activist Sowore slams Peter Obi over visit to beg Afe Babalola for detained human rights lawyer Farotimi

The African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Omoyele Sowore, has criticised Peter Obi for visiting Afe Babalola to ‘beg’ in the ongoing case against human rights activist and lawyer Dele Farotimi.

Farotimi is facing charges of criminal defamation and cybercrime in both the Ekiti State Magistrates’ Court and the Federal High Court in Ado Ekiti, reports Vanguard.

A social activist, Moses Paul, posted that Obi visited Afe Babalola at his office within Afe Babalola University, where they discussed important issues, including the case of activist and lawyer Dele Farotimi.

He wrote, “Today, Mr. @PeterObi travelled from Lagos to Ekiti State, dedicating the entire day to meaningful engagements. He visited Aare Afe Babalola at his office within the Afe Babalola University, where they had in-depth discussions on critical issues, including the situation of activists and lawyer @DeleFarotimi. Following this, Mr. @PeterObi proceeded to the prison facility where @DeleFarotimi is being held.

“In a private meeting, he expressed solidarity and engaged in a candid exchange aimed at addressing the prevailing challenges.”

In response, Sowore condemned Obi today via a post on his X handle, criticising him for visiting Babalola to seek forgiveness for Farotimi.

He wrote, “I condemn those who went to “beg” Chief Afe Babalola today over the unjust detention and persecution of Dele Farotimi; the delegation led by Peter Obi did colossal injustice to the struggle to drain the swamp of judicial criminality in our country.

“Obi’s action is like forcing Rosa Parks to return to the back of the bus of racial injustice during the civil rights era in the US! The struggle continues!”

Meanwhile, yesterday, the Federal High Court in Ado Ekiti granted bail to Farotimi in a case filed by the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, over alleged cybercrime.
