Nigeria’s Ambassador to the State of Qatar, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, yesterday formally assumed his diplomatic duties after presenting his Letter of Credence to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar, in a ceremony that underscored the enduring ties between both countries and their shared commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation.
The presentation, held at the Amiri Diwan in Doha, was conducted with full state honours, including the inspection of a Guard of Honour, reflecting the significance Qatar attaches to diplomatic engagement with Nigeria.
During a private audience that followed the ceremony, the Qatari leader warmly welcomed the Nigerian envoy and reaffirmed the longstanding cordial relations between both countries. The Amir recalled previous high-level exchanges between Nigeria and Qatar and reiterated his country’s commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation across areas of mutual interest.
According to a statement issued after the ceremony, the discussions highlighted the steady growth in diplomatic relations between the two countries, with renewed emphasis on translating political goodwill into broader economic and strategic partnerships.
In his remarks, Ambassador Yakubu conveyed the condolences of the Government and people of Nigeria over the recent accident at Ras Laffan Industrial City, expressing solidarity with the Qatari government and those affected by the incident.
The ambassador also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Qatar in key sectors, including trade, investment, education, security and humanitarian affairs, noting that stronger collaboration in these areas would deliver tangible benefits to both countries.
Nigeria and Qatar have in recent years intensified diplomatic and economic engagement through high-level official visits and agreements aimed at expanding commercial relations, attracting investment and fostering cooperation in agriculture, aviation, energy, education and infrastructure. Both countries have also continued to engage on regional and global issues through multilateral platforms.
Professor Yakubu’s presentation of credentials formally marks the commencement of his tenure as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Qatar, where he is expected to drive efforts to consolidate existing partnerships while exploring new opportunities for cooperation in line with Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives and economic diplomacy agenda.
