Anglican Primate calls for new Nigerian Constitution, national reconciliation

The FrontierThe FrontierFebruary 20, 2025 3561 Minutes read0

•Reverend Henry Ndukuba

The Primate of the Anglican Communion, Most Reverend Henry Ndukuba, has called for the abolition of the current Nigerian Constitution and the drafting of a new one that prioritises justice and equity in a truly democratic system.

The Anglican Primate stated this at the Standing Committee Meeting of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, held at Saint Cyprian’s Anglican Church, Hospital Road, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, reports Channels TV.

The Standing Committee Meeting is a biannual event held in February and September.

Most Reverend Ndukuba emphasised that a Constitution developed through citizen participation is the only way to address the nation’s challenges. He said that the present system breeds greed, anarchy, and injustice.

He condemned the killings across the country and urged authorities to take decisive action to restore security.

He also encouraged citizens to remain resilient, expressing hope for a better future.

He noted that while many of these crimes are committed by foreigners from neighbouring countries, such individuals are often hired by politicians to advance their interests.

Ndukuba also called for a concerted effort to detoxicate the nation and promote total healing.

He urged President Bola Tinubu to leave a lasting legacy by addressing the factors threatening national unity.

As part of this effort, he advocated for the establishment of a National Reconciliation Commission to tackle deep-seated divisions and set the country on a path to recovery.

He further stressed that addressing corruption and other socio-economic issues is key to restoring hope, particularly among disillusioned youths.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara, in his speech, stated that his administration is already addressing key socio-economic challenges highlighted by the primate, including youth development, workers’ welfare, and security services.

He emphasised the government’s commitment to collaborating with the church to foster positive societal values by providing the necessary logistical support for citizen re-orientation.

Acknowledging the need for improved workers’ welfare, particularly in the healthcare sector, Fubara stressed the importance of enhancing conditions for professionals in the field.

He also noted that Nigerians are among the most productive people globally, often excelling once they leave the country.

As part of his support for the Anglican Church, the governor announced a donation of five hundred million naira to aid its work in 2025.
