BREAKING: ADC trouble deepens as party chieftain Salihu Lukman quits

The FrontierThe FrontierJuly 16, 2026 221 Minutes read0

•Salihu Lukman

Former All Progressives Congress (APC) national vice chairman, Salihu Lukman, has resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing internal disagreements and accusing former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, of actions he believes have negatively affected the party’s progress.

Lukman, a key figure involved in the ADC’s political reorganisation ahead of the 2027 general elections, announced his decision after what he described as growing concerns over the direction of the party and the influence of certain individuals within its leadership structure, reports The Guardian.

In his resignation statement, the former party chieftain alleged that El-Rufai’s approach to party affairs had contributed to divisions within the ADC, arguing that the opposition platform was drifting away from the principles of collective leadership and internal democracy.

He maintained that his decision was driven by a desire to remain committed to his political convictions rather than continue within a structure where, according to him, critical concerns were not being adequately addressed.

Lukman had previously raised concerns about internal struggles within the ADC, warning that leadership battles and attempts by individuals to control party structures could weaken the opposition party ahead of the 2027 elections.

His latest resignation comes amid heightened political activity within the ADC, which has emerged as a major opposition platform ahead of the next general election cycle. The party has attracted several prominent political figures seeking to build a stronger challenge against the ruling party.

The development also follows recent controversies involving ADC leaders and El-Rufai, including disagreements surrounding access to the former governor while he was in custody of anti-corruption authorities. Lukman was among party officials who had sought access to El-Rufai during that period.

Political observers say Lukman’s exit could trigger further debate over the internal cohesion of the ADC and the role of influential figures as the party prepares for the 2027 electoral contest.

As of press time, El-Rufai and other ADC leaders had not issued a detailed public response to Lukman’s resignation and allegations.
