Carrick says Man Utd could plan move for new wingers

Manchester United could enter the summer transfer market in search of fresh options on the wings, with manager Michael Carrick admitting the club is assessing the need for greater balance in wide areas.

Carrick’s comments, made ahead of today’s clash at Newcastle, come after United spent the past three transfer windows parting ways with several established wide players, reports AFP.

Asked whether left wing could be strengthened ahead of next season, Carrick said the club is reviewing its options to ensure flexibility in attack.

“You’re always looking at the balance of the squad,” he said. “It’s definitely something to look at.”

Pressed further, he added: “Quite possibly.”

However, the current squad has far fewer orthodox wingers available.

Sancho is currently on loan at Aston Villa and is unlikely to remain at Old Trafford beyond the summer. Antony completed a permanent move to Real Betis, while Garnacho joined Chelsea. Marcus Rashford also departed on loan to Barcelona after falling out of favour, with the Spanish side holding an option to make the move permanent.

That leaves Amad Diallo as the only recognised wide attacker in the current setup, although Carrick has experimented with other players in advanced roles.

Despite acknowledging the possible need for reinforcements, the United boss insisted the situation is not urgent.

“It’s not a huge concern at the moment,” Carrick said. “We can still be dangerous. There are different ways of doing it and good options across the front line.

“We can still be dangerous. Matheus [Cunha] has played that role and caused big problems and had big moments. When he plays wide, he is tough to stop one-on-one.”

United have been linked with several attacking players, including young RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande and Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon, though the club are also prioritising central midfield reinforcements ahead of the next campaign.

With the transfer window yet to open, any decisions will come in the months ahead. For now, Carrick says his focus remains on maximising the current squad while planning for long-term improvement.

“We’re always thinking of that perfect scenario of mixing players together and connections and seeing how it suits on the pitch,” he said.

“There’’re different ways of doing it and we have really good options across the front line.”
