Council chairman shuts market over prostitution, other immoral activities

The Garun Mallam Local Government Area (LGA) of Kano State has shut down Kwanar Gafan Tomato market over alleged prostitution, adultery, homosexuality, and other immoral activities within the market premises.

While confirming the development, Hon. Barr Aminu Kadawa, the Garun Mallam Local Government chairman, gave all occupants in the market a seven-day ultimatum to vacate the vicinity until further notice, reports Nigerian Tribune.

However, it was gathered that the alleged immorality being perpetrated by some youths and married women prompted the local council authority to take adequate action to restore sanity at the market.

The council chairman said that “looking at how the market has become a center for prostitution and other immoral activities contrary to the purpose of the market, it has to be closed indefinitely to restore sanity.”

Kadawa, who gave the order yesterday at the inauguration of the economic revitalisation in the LGA, asked the market occupants to pack their belongings and leave the market before January 1, 2025.

He said anyone caught within the market premises after the expiration of the ultimatum would be dealt with accordingly.

The local government chairman added that a date would be announced on when the market will be reopened for normal activities.

Earlier, an Islamic scholar, Imam Abdullahi Chiromawa, also expressed worry over the upbringing of their children in the area due to the immoral activities at the market.

According to him, “The market has become a center of adultery, homosexuality, and prostitution for the youths and even married woman.”
