Dangote truck, passenger bus collision kills 10, injures 6 on Lagos-Ibadan expressway

•Dangote truck, passenger bus collision

No fewer than 10 people lost their lives, while six others were injured in a road crash at Sapade Bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway last night.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun Sector Command, said the crash occurred at about 8:05 p.m. and involved a white Sinotruk Dangote truck and a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number EKY 290 YM, reports The Nation.

The Ogun Sector Command’s spokesperson, Superintendent Route Commander Odunsi Afolabi, said 18 people were involved in the accident, comprising 15 adult males, 2 adult females, and 1 male child.

According to him, the victims who died included nine adult males and one male child, while four adult males and two adult females sustained varying degrees of injury.

Two other adult males escaped unhurt.

Odunsi said FRSC personnel rescued the injured and took them to Victory Hospital, Ogere, for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at FOS Mortuary, Ipara.

He said preliminary investigations identified speed violation, wrongful overtaking and dangerous driving as the causes of the crash.

Further findings indicated that the truck driver allegedly reversed on the expressway after missing his route.

The commercial bus, reportedly travelling at high speed, attempted to pass through the limited space but collided with the reversing truck.

Odunsi said the damaged vehicles had been handed over to officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Ishara Division, while the accident scene had been cleared to restore the free flow of traffic.

Reacting to the incident, the Ogun Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, sympathised with the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

He also warned motorists, particularly commercial drivers and truck operators, against reversing on highways, speeding, dangerous driving and other traffic offences, stressing that strict compliance with traffic regulations remains essential to reducing avoidable road crashes.
