Death after buttocks enlargement: Filmmaker Akatugba warns aspiring actresses, says Elena’s story should be a wake-up call

The FrontierThe FrontierMarch 21, 2026 2290 Minutes read0

•Late actress Elena Jessica

Notable filmmaker and ANCOP president, Joe Akatugba has cautioned aspiring actors against chasing fame through cosmetic surgery, citing the tragic death of Elena Jessica after Brazilian Butt-Lift (BBL) complications.

Akatugba emphasises Nollywood’s foundation of talent, discipline, creativity, and professionalism.

“Lasting success has never come from appearance alone,” he stated.

Akatugba gave the warning, in a statement he posted on the filmmakers’ WhatsApp platform.

Despite not being in the industry, he notes that Elena’s death has sparked concern about notable and aspiring actresses seeking attention through body enhancements.

Akatugba, however, advises actresses to focus on craft development, not physical appearance.

“As someone who has spent years in the film industry, I strongly believe that Nollywood is built on talent, discipline, creativity, and professionalism, not cosmetic surgery.

‎”While the film industry has always celebrated beauty and glamour, lasting success has never come from appearance alone,”Akatugba said.

He added: “My message is clear: focus on talent, understand filmmaking, not shortcuts. Elena’s story should be a wake-up call. Build your career on skill, character, and dedication, not dangerous shortcuts.”
