EyeCare with Dr Priscilia Imade: Back-to-school vision screening

The FrontierThe FrontierSeptember 2, 2024 2571 Minutes read0

•Dr Priscilia Imade

As the back-to-school season approaches this month, parents and educators are busy preparing children for the upcoming academic year. Among the many tasks on the checklist, ensuring that children have a comprehensive vision screening is the most important.

Good vision is essential for academic success, and a vision screening can help detect any potential issues early, setting the stage for a productive and enjoyable school year.

Why vision screening is important

Children rely heavily on their vision for learning. Approximately 80% of classroom learning involves visual tasks such as reading, writing, and using digital devices. Undiagnosed vision problems can lead to difficulties in these areas, potentially affecting a child’s academic performance and overall well-being.

Early detection and treatment of vision issues can prevent learning difficulties, reduce eye strain, and improve a child’s confidence and participation in school activities.

Steps for a successful vision screening

Schedule an appointment: This is an ideal time to schedule a comprehensive eye exam for your child. Many optometrists offer back-to-school vision screenings, making it convenient to fit into your busy schedule.

Prepare your child: Explain the importance of the eye exam to your child and what to expect during the screening. This can help alleviate any anxiety the child may have.

Provide a comprehensive health history: Share any relevant health information with the eye care professional, including any family history of vision problems or any symptoms your child has been experiencing.

Follow-up on recommendations: If the eye exam reveals any vision problems, follow through with the recommended treatment, whether it’s glasses, contact lenses, or vision therapy.

Back-to-school vision screenings are an essential part of preparing for the academic year. By ensuring that your child has good vision, you can help set them up for success in the classroom and beyond. Schedule a comprehensive eye exam this new month, follow through with any necessary treatments, and promote healthy vision habits to support your child’s learning and development.

A little effort now can lead to a bright and clear future for your child.
