Five people killed, eight rescued in multiple-motor accident on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

•Accident scene

It was a gloomy weekend as a multiple-vehicle accident on the Ibadan end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway claimed at least five lives.

The accident occurred on Friday night at about 10 p.m. and involved several vehicles, including tankers, trucks and smaller vehicles, reports Channels TV.

Eight people were rescued alive from the scene with varying degrees of injuries.

The incident occurred around Satguru Maharaji Ji Village, just before the Ibadan Toll Gate.

According to the Oyo State Fire Service Agency, the accident involved six trucks, two Toyota Hilux vans and two cars.

Eyewitness accounts indicated that one of the trucks may have suffered brake failure and collided with a truck parked on the road, triggering a chain collision that claimed five lives.

Those rescued were rushed to the hospital for medical attention.

The Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident, explaining that the accident was caused by brake failure.

He said, “Upon arrival, we discovered that the accident involved six trucks (gas tankers and trailer trucks) and two cars, resulting in a fire outbreak.

“Five persons were recovered dead, while eight others were rescued and handed over to the team of the FRSC led by SRC Adegbite from Toll Gate, Ibadan, for further medical attention at the nearest hospital to the scene of the accident.”

The fire service also disclosed that the fire had been extinguished and normalcy restored to the affected area, even as security agents and road safety officials worked to ease the gridlock caused by the incident.
