From Ojuelegba to global stardom: Music star Wizkid’s journey from studio struggles to world records

The FrontierThe FrontierMarch 2, 2026 732 Minutes read0

•Wizkid

Global music icon Wizkid has carved out a legacy defined by grit, talent and global influence, transforming a modest upbringing in Lagos into one of the most compelling success stories in contemporary African music.

Born Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun on July 16, 1990, Wizkid grew up in Ojuelegba, a densely populated suburb of Lagos, in a large interfaith family as the last of 12 children, reports The Nation.

His early years were shaped by financial constraints that made access to professional music recording a luxury.

Humble beginnings

Before fame, he earned a reputation as a relentless “studio rat,” spending long hours at OJB Jezreel’s Point Beat Studios in the hope of securing a few minutes of complimentary recording time. His musical journey began at age 11 under the name “Lil’ Prinz,” and he later formed a church group known as the Glorious Five. These formative experiences laid the foundation for a career built on persistence and craft.

The breakthrough

His breakthrough came in 2009 when he signed with Banky W’s Empire Mates Entertainment (EME), a pivotal moment that repositioned his career.

The release of “Holla at Your Boy” in 2010 marked his commercial arrival, quickly followed by his debut album Superstar in 2011. The project cemented his status as a household name within Nigeria’s rapidly evolving pop landscape.

Global dominance

Wizkid’s trajectory shifted decisively onto the global stage in 2016 with his collaboration with Drake on the chart-topping hit “One Dance.”

The record not only expanded his international audience but also earned him recognition in the Guinness World Records, making him the first Afrobeats artiste to achieve that distinction.

His contribution to Beyoncé’s “Brown Skin Girl” further elevated his profile, earning him a Grammy Award and reinforcing his standing within the global music elite.

In 2020, his album Made in Lagos marked another defining chapter. The project, anchored by the hit single “Essence,” achieved a historic milestone when it became the first Nigerian song to chart on the Billboard Hot 100.

The album underscored his role in mainstreaming Afrobeats on a global scale and solidified his cultural influence beyond commercial metrics.

Legacy and wealth

Despite international acclaim and multimillion-dollar performance fees, Wizkid has consistently framed his success in personal terms. He has often noted that his proudest achievement is lifting his family out of poverty.

From waiting outside studios for recording scraps to headlining major global festivals such as Rolling Loud, his evolution reflects both individual determination and the expanding reach of African music.

Wizkid’s story stands as a testament to resilience, strategic collaboration and artistic consistency — proof that talent, when matched with discipline and vision, can transcend circumstance and reshape global soundscapes.
