Gateway 2024: Explosion causes panic near Games Centre in Abeokuta

The FrontierThe FrontierMay 21, 2025 1950 Minutes read0

•Gas explosion

Panic spread yesterday evening following a gas explosion that occurred behind the Alake Sports Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State — the venue currently hosting the handball event of the ongoing sports games.

Eyewitnesses reported a loud blast that shook the area and caused confusion among residents and participants at the sports facility, reports The Guardian.

The explosion was said to have taken place at a gas refilling point located behind the centre.

Emergency responders were seen arriving at the scene to assess the situation and begin preliminary containment efforts. The extent of damage or possible casualties has yet to be confirmed.

Authorities have cordoned off the area, and further updates are expected as the situation develops.
