JUST IN: Governor Yusuf picks Garo as deputy

The FrontierThe FrontierApril 22, 2026 1081 Minutes read0

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has named Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo as deputy governor.

This follows the resignation of Comrade Abdulsalam Gwarzo.

Gwarzo had fallen out with Yusuf after he dumped the New Nigerian Peoples Parry (NNPP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC), reports Daily Trust.

The former deputy governor had come under pressure to join the governor but he refused.

Subsequently, the State House of Assembly commenced impeachment proceeding against him.

Gwarzo tendered his resignation amid the storm, then dumped the NNPP but for the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In a statement, the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, announced that Garo had been nominated to fill the vacant deputy governor position.

He said the nomination was in line with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers the Governor to nominate a Deputy Governor where a vacancy exists.

“Following a wide consultations with key stakeholders, the Governor has requested the Assembly to grant the necessary approval for Garo’s nomination.”

“48 year old Murtala Sule Garo is a season political administrator with over two decades of service in both elective and appointed positions.

“He has served as State Organising Secretary of his party, Special Adviser to Kano State Governor and elected Kabo Local Government Chairman.

“He also served as Chairman of ALGON Kano, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and Deputy Governorship Candidate of the APC in the 2023 general elections.

“His nomination is part of efforts to strengthen governance and sustain effective service delivery in Kano State.”
