JUST IN: NiMeT workers begin indefinite nationwide strike

The FrontierThe FrontierApril 23, 2025 2881 Minutes read0

•Aviation workers protest

Aviation workers unions have announced the commencement of an indefinite nationwide strike by workers of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) from last night over poor remuneration and unmet agreements with management.

In a joint statement, the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE) accused NiMet management of failing to honour a January 28, 2025 agreement aimed at addressing the prolonged financial hardship faced by its workers.

The unions described the situation as an “unacceptable elongation of suffering” and directed all NiMet staff nationwide to withdraw their services indefinitely from midnight on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, reports The Guardian.

“As you are all aware, our unions have strived strenuously over the past few years to alleviate the exceedingly unjust remunerations conundrum that has visited extreme poverty and consequent untold hardship on NiMet workers. These efforts have been largely without substantial results,” the union said.

“You are equally aware that the agreement between the management and our unions since 28th January, 2025 towards partial amelioration of the above stated condition has been honoured largely only in the breach.”

The unions thereby called on all branches and state councils to mobilize aviation workers in solidarity with NiMet employees and ensure full compliance with the strike directive.

The notice was signed by Comrade Ocheme Aba (NUATE), Comrade Abdul Rasaq Saldu (ANAP), and Comrade Sikiru Waheed (AUPCTRE).
