Labour Party considers suing former national chairman Abure over logo, social media

The Labour Party (LP) has initiated a mechanism likely to culminate in a legal challenge against its former National Chairman, Julius Abure, over his continued misuse of its logo and dormant social media handles, allegedly to misrepresent the party.

It was learnt in Abuja today that the Senator Nenadi Usman-led National Working Committee (NWC) is also displeased with the former executive’s relentless use of social media accounts, specifically an X (formerly Twitter) account with the handle @LabourpartyNGR_. This account, the party said, falsely claims to disseminate official information on behalf of the Labour Party.

The party leadership was particularly irked by a recent post claiming it was preparing for the return of its former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and Alhaji Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to run on its ticket, reports Vanguard.

It described the statement as false, unauthorised, and not reflecting the party’s position.

Speaking on behalf of the party’s Chairman, her Senior Special Assistant (Media), Ken Asogwa, said, “The Party has formally petitioned the Nigerian Police to facilitate the recovery of its official X account (LabourPartyNG) from the former Party leadership currently in control of it.

“The matter is receiving due attention, and individuals involved, including Barr. Julius Abure and Alhaji Umar Farouk, are cooperating with the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Intelligence Department, providing relevant information on their activities, including unauthorized use of the Party’s social media platforms.”

Asogwa explained that other social media handles in contention include Facebook: Labour Party-Nig (approximately 12,000 followers) and X: LabourPartyNG (approximately 837,000 followers).

He reiterated that the party had issued several disclaimers on the matter, noting it was compelled to issue another one following the recent announcement.

According to him, the party currently does not have an active social media page pending institutional efforts to retrieve it.
