Lagos explosion: 4 in critical condition, one confirmed dead

•Explosion

Four of the victims of Friday’s explosion in the Ikeja area of Lagos are battling to stay alive.

This comes after one of the victims died on Saturday.

An explosion rocked a Closed Circuit Television dealer’s shop on Kodesho Street, near Computer Village in the Ikeja area of Lagos State, on Friday, reports The PUNCH.

A dealer in the popular tech hub who craved anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the incident said, “We lost one of them on Saturday evening. The doctors made efforts to save him, but he didn’t make it.

“The victims were closely affected by the explosion, and this resulted in severe burns they suffered. As I speak to you, the four others are currently battling for their lives.”

The Lagos State Police Command had earlier confirmed that five persons were injured in the explosion, which occurred around 6:35 pm.

Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin added that the five individuals injured during the explosion were taken to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital for treatment.

When contacted to confirm the death of the victim, Hundeyin said, “Yes, we have been informed that one of them died on Saturday.”

When asked about the state of the investigation, the police spokesperson said, “The investigation is still on. We will make it public as soon as it is concluded.”

The incident occurred barely a week after a yet-to-be-identified welder was killed after a military-grade grenade exploded at Idi-Araba in the Mushin area of Lagos State.

It was earlier reported that three other persons were injured in the incident, which occurred on Thursday.

It was gathered that some scavengers in a metal scrap yard engaged the deceased welder while attempting to dismantle one of the grenades in their possession.

The device, however, detonated in the process, killing the welder on the spot while three others sustained severe injuries.

It was gathered that the explosion resulted in panic in the area, while it also rendered some residents homeless after affecting their homes.
