LG Council chairman pays 13th-month salary to workers to cushion January hardship

To cushion the effect of January hardship being experienced by every worker after the Yuletide, the chairman of Etsako East Local Government Council, Hon. Sunny Ekpetika Ekpeson, has approved the payment of a 13th-month salary to council workers.

This is the first of such initiatives by any local government chairman in Edo State, reports Daily Independent.

Ekpeson said the impact of Edo State governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo’s SHINE Agenda is increasingly evident at the grassroots level.

“The historic move underscores the practical dividends of the governor’s people-centred vision and reflects a growing culture of responsive and humane leadership across the state, he said.

Ekpeson, widely acknowledged as one of the youngest and most vibrant council chairmen in Nigeria, has emerged as a pace-setter, urging his colleagues across the state to place workers’ welfare at the heart of governance.

Stakeholders have hailed the payment as a significant morale booster and a clear signal that the Okpebholo administration is committed to converting policy intentions into measurable benefits for citizens.

In a period when many local governments struggle to meet basic obligations, the payment of a 13th-month salary — often considered unattainable — has restored confidence in grassroots administration and highlighted the importance of prudent financial management.

Residents of Etsako East have consistently described Ekpeson as one of the most effective council chairmen since the return of democracy, noting that his achievements within just three months in an acting capacity reflect the broader leadership philosophy of Governor Okpebholo.

“The SHINE Agenda, with its emphasis on service, accountability, and inclusive growth, is steadily repositioning local governments as true drivers of development.

“For council workers in Etsako East, the bonus arrives at a crucial time, providing financial relief and renewed motivation to deliver better public service.

For Edo State, it marks another step toward entrenching a culture of responsible governance aligned with reform and results.

“As the Okpebholo administration continues to raise the bar in public leadership, the example is set by Rt. Hon. Sunny Ekpetika Ekpeson stands as compelling evidence that purposeful leadership at the grassroots can translate vision into visible progress.

“The chairman appeals to all Edo people to join hands with the governor, Senator Monday OKpebholo to move the state to a higher level,” added the statement.
