Meta-owned social media platforms Facebook and Instagram suffered a major outage today, leaving millions of users worldwide unable to access the services.
The disruption affected Facebook’s website, mobile application, and Messenger service, with users reporting widespread login failures and service interruptions, reports The Nation.
Users reported being automatically logged out of their accounts, with attempts to log back in returning error messages stating that “an unexpected error occurred.”
Visitors to Facebook’s website were met with a notice indicating that the company was working to resolve the issue.
Reports of the outage spread rapidly on X, formerly Twitter, as users sought confirmation from others experiencing similar disruptions.
Instagram was also affected, with some users unable to load the website.
WhatsApp remained largely operational despite sharing backend infrastructure with other Meta platforms.
The outage appeared to be global, with complaints coming from multiple countries within minutes.
Downdetector, which monitors service disruptions, logged a sharp spike in reports related to Facebook and Instagram before the tracking site itself encountered technical difficulties.
Meta had not issued an official statement on the cause of the outage at press time.
