NAFDAC closes Chinese stores, cosmetics shops in Abuja raids

The FrontierThe FrontierOctober 3, 2025 1121 Minutes read0

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed two Chinese-run supermarkets in Jabi District and eight cosmetics shops in Wuse Market, Abuja, for distributing unregistered and mislabeled products.

Led by Mr. Musa Embugushiki under the guidance of Director-General Prof. Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye, the operation confiscated goods valued at over ₦170 million, reports Daily Independent.

Following consumer complaints and surveillance, NAFDAC targeted the supermarkets on Mike Akhigbe Way and Ebitu Ukiwe Street for selling unregistered food items labeled only in Chinese, flouting the agency’s requirement for English labels to ensure consumer safety.

Despite the Ebitu Ukiwe Street operator’s denials, the raid confirmed active sales of these products.

In Wuse Market, eight shops were shut down for offering banned, expired, and unregistered cosmetics, aphrodisiacs, and aesthetic medicines, including Wenicks Capsules, Maxman Capsules, Boobs Enlargement supplements, Curvy Weight Gain products, and Skin Whitening Vitamin Gummies.

Investigations revealed individuals falsely posing as dermatologists and pharmacists, pushing harmful products for body enhancement and skin whitening.

Prof. Adeyeye stressed NAFDAC’s commitment to protecting Nigerians from dangerous substances linked to risks like skin cancer, kidney damage, irritability, and memory loss. She urged the public to choose only NAFDAC-registered products, called on foreign businesses to comply with Nigerian laws, and encouraged reporting of suspicious outlets to the agency.
