•A transformer

One person is feared dead in a transformer explosion that rocked Nnewi, Anambra State today.

The unidentified victim was said to have been cleaning some weed around the transformer stationed close to his residence along Onitsha-Nnewi-Owerri Old Road, when the sad incident occurred, reports Daily Independent.

Sources said a female passerby whose name was not known had parts of her body burnt when a blazing electric cable from the high tension fell on her body.

A motorcycle operator, Mr. Monday Nwachukwu who was transporting a passenger to work said he and the passenger escaped by the whiskers when the incident occurred, adding that he was almost at the exact point where the victim fell when he heard big boom noise, looked up and saw a thick smoke combined with fire rolling downwards.

“I was driving past here.i was carrying a passenger. What I heard was gbooom in my front. Fire burst out and the high tension cable blazed and cut, and as people were running away one of the wire cut and fell on a female passerby and burnt part of her body. They have taken the victim away”, said Nwachukwu.

The incident which occurred near the Deeper Life Bible Church, Okwu Obu shrine, was said to have attracted a large crowd and caused gridlock.

When our correspondent reached the scene of the incident, the victim was said to have been removed.

A large crowd gathered at the place discussing the incident. Debris of charred objects littered the road.

The cause of the incident could not be ascertained at press time.
