Peter Obi’s private visit to APC chieftain sparks 2027 political speculation

Nigerians have started reading political meaning to the private visit of the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi to the Kano State-born All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Abdulsalam Abdulkarim Zaura, known as AA Zaura.

Zaura, who is the President of the AA Zaura Foundation International, was also the APC Kano Central Senatorial Candidate in 2023, reports Daily Independent.

The meeting between Obi and Zaura, which lasted over an hour behind closed doors in Abuja, has been described as highly confidential.

However, sources close to the gathering suggest that the visit is part of Obi’s broader efforts to engage with influential political figures ahead of the 2027 elections, with a keen focus on strengthening his ties to the Northern region, particularly Kano State, a key state in Nigeria’s political landscape.

During the meeting, Obi praised Zaura for his exceptional leadership and philanthropic endeavors, particularly through the AA Zaura Foundation International, which has been instrumental in lifting many Nigerians out of poverty.

Obi commended Zaura’s vision of transitioning Nigerians from a consumption-based economy to one of production, emphasising the long-term benefits such initiatives bring to the country.

The former Anambra governor acknowledged Zaura’s efforts in not just political leadership, but also his personal commitment to empowering the most vulnerable in society.

In a show of mutual respect, AA Zaura expressed his admiration for Obi’s consistent advocacy on national issues, particularly his commitment to a more prosperous and self-sufficient Nigeria.

Zaura extended his well-wishes to Obi for his future political pursuits, reaffirming his dedication to positive social change.

As both figures continue to shape the political discourse in Nigeria, the visit has raised eyebrows, with many speculating that Obi views Zaura as a critical ally in his strategy to bolster support in Northern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 presidential race.
