A disturbing incident has sparked widespread outrage in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, after a police inspector brutally assaulted his three children over allegations of witchcraft.

The incident, which occurred weekend, has led to the arrest of the accused police inspector, simply identified as John, attached to the Anti-Cultism unit of the Igbogene police unit, reports Sunday Vanguard.

According to eyewitnesses, concerned neighbours alerted the State Security Patrol unit, Doo Akpor, who rescued the children and took them to the hospital for treatment.

Though the condition of the children is reported to be stable, there are concerns for their safety while receiving treatment.

Meanwhile, various organisations, including the International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA, Bayelsa chapter led by Dr. Bomq Toney Miebai, the National Association of Women Against Gender Based Violence led by Dr. Dise Ogbise Goddy Harry and the Chairperson of the Do Foundation, Bayelsa chapter, Dianna Iluma, have condemned the incident.

It was learnt that the groups have initiated the case of criminal assault and attempted murder against the police inspector at the Akenfa Police Station.

The Ministry of Women Affairs and Gender has also got involved, with the Permanent Secretary visiting the police station and hospital to gather more information.

Speaking on the development Harry said: “The CP has ordered the arrest of the accused and the transfer of the case to the police headquarters.

“He has assured that the case will be thoroughly investigated, and the accused will face the full force of the law. We are calling on public spirited individuals and group to assist them in getting their lives back.”

Contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Musa Muhammed, confirmed the development, but said information at his disposal was sketchy.
