Reps pass bill to establish national women, children hospitals in Imo

House of Representatives at the plenary today passed for first reading two bills on the establishment of ‘National Hospital for Women’ and ‘National Children’s Hospital’, Ideato, Imo.

The two private member legislations were sponsored by Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, member representing Ideato North, South federal constituency of Imo, reports Nigerian Tribune.

According to a statement issued by his Media office, Hon. Ugochinyere who doubles as Chairman, House Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream) explained that the proposed National Hospital for Women in Ideato, Imo when established seeks to specialise in “promotion of reproductive and maternal health, the research, prevention, sensitisation and treatment of obstetrics fistula and for related matters.

As encapsulated in the bill, the Board of the hospital shall consist of: a chairman; the Chief Medical Director of the Hospital; Director of Clinical Services; Director of Administration; Director of Finance; Director of Research; Director of Maintenance; a representative of the Federal Ministry of Health; a representative of the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development; a representative of the Family Support Trust Fund; a representative of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency- NPHCDA; a representative of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives; a representative of the host community. The chairman and members of the Board, other than ex-officio members, shall be – appointed by the President; and persons of proven integrity and ability.”

For the establishment of the National Children’s Hospital, Ideato, Imo, Hon. Ugochinyere proposed that: “The Primary Health Center in Ideato, Imo is hereby upgraded and established as the National Children’s Hospital, Ideato, Imo.

The hospital Board Management should constitute of a Chairman; Chief Medical Director; Director of Clinical Services; Director of Administration; Director of Finance; Director of Maintenance; a representative of the Federal Ministry of Health; a representative of the Federal Ministry of Women’s Affairs and Social Development; a representative of the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing; a representative of the National Planning Commission; a representative of the Family Support Trust Fund; a representative of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria; a representative of the Paediatric Association of Nigeria; a representative of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives; and a representative of the host community.
