•Accident scene

12 persons were burnt to death yesterday afternoon at the Malo axis of Ogere, Ogun State, on the Lagos Ibadan Expressway.

The Federal Road Safety Corps Public Education Officer, Florence Okpe, in a statement, said the accident involved a White Mazda bus with registration number DDA733XA.

It was learnt that 16 persons comprising 12 male adults, three female adults and one female child were involved in the accident.

Four male adults were injured while the remaining 12 passengers were burnt to death.

Okpe attributed wrongful overtaking on the part of the bus driver to be a suspected cause of the lone accident.

The driver was said to have lost control of the ill-fated vehicle having rammed into the road divider.

The bus was reported to have fallen and engulfed in flames.

The FRSC spokesperson said the rescue operation was carried out by a team from the agency’s team Ogere Unit Command at about 3.14 pm.

She said that the Sector Commander, Ogun Sector Command, CC Akinwunmi Fasakin, urged motorists to maintain the stipulated speed on the highway and also ensure a clear road before overtaking.
