Stop raping women – Nigerians demand justice over assault claims at Delta festival

The FrontierThe FrontierMarch 20, 2026 5532 Minutes read0

Outrage has erupted on X (formerly Twitter) following allegations of sexual assault against women during a festival in Ozoro, Delta State.

The incident has triggered a wave of reactions online, with users calling for justice and urging authorities to act swiftly, using the hashtag “Stop Raping Women.”

The controversy followed the circulation of videos and reports allegedly showing women being assaulted during a traditional festival in the Delta community, reports The PUNCH.

Although details surrounding the festival remain unclear, the nature of the allegations has drawn widespread condemnation, with many users accusing society of tolerating violence against women under the guise of culture.

An X user, Moyosoreoluwa, who identifies as #sore0luwa_, expressed the collective frustration, calling out the authorities directly.

“Stop raping women!!!! What is the delta state government even doing about this? How long has this been going on in Ozoro, delta state??” she wrote.

The conversation quickly turned to a familiar, but heated, debate about the tendency to deflect from the issue of sexual violence. Tegbe!, who identifies as #TomiwaTegbe, slammed those who often question the motives of victims when such incidents are reported.

“When they say “stop raping women”, olori-ebis will rear their heads to start asking “what of false accusers?”. Now there’s a whole ass festival dedicated to raping women, with videos circulating, you’re quiet because you’re still investigating the videos with forensics abi?” he wrote.

Another user, Vit DHEE, who tweets as #Dhara_ex, highlighted the irony of the “not all men” defense in the face of organized, communal violence against women.

“NOT ALL MEN” And when we say stop raping women, stop sexually assaulting women, they’ll come out in their numbers to attack you. Yet this kind of stupid festival still exists in 2026 where the male gender happily do this to women and go unpunished!!!!,” She fumed.

The criticism extended beyond the act itself to what many see as a dangerous hypocrisy between religious identity and harmful traditional practices.

“What’s more crazy about this is that these same people go to church ooo. They’ll go to church but choose to do ritual rites of a traditional god that they’ve denounced all because it’s an opportunity to cause harm to women. WHEN WILL MEN STOP RAPING WOMEN??,” SABINA who identifies as #sabinaababy, added.

The calls for action grew more radical as some users argued that traditions that violate fundamental human rights have no place in modern society. A user, Nze with the username #nzemmili, did not mince words, demanding an end to the cultural justification for such acts.

He wrote, “Some cultures needs to die, and if your culture is tampering on human rights, it needs to die! If your culture tells you that there are days meant to rape and molest women, then that culture must die! It’s a useless culture!”

Reacting to the development, the spokesperson for the Delta State Police Command, Bright Edafe, described the incident as alarming, disgusting and embarrassing.

As of press time, no arrests have been announced, but the police have assured the public that the investigation is underway.
