TRAGEDY: Days after murder of nurse, female lawyer killed, dumped on Abuja road

The FrontierThe FrontierJanuary 8, 2026 4142 Minutes read0

•A lawyer’s wig and gown

Barely days after the body of a nurse with the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, was found by the roadside, the body of an Abuja-based female lawyer has been discovered along the Kubwa Expressway.

Nurse Chinemerem Chuwumeziem, a staff member of FMC Jabi, finished her afternoon shift on January 3, 2026, and boarded a vehicle on her way home, but never arrived, reports Daily Trust.

Her lifeless body was later found dumped by the roadside.

While details of the circumstances leading to her death are still being awaited, the body of the lawyer, Princess Chigbo Mediatrix, believed to be a former Treasurer of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Abuja Branch, was discovered by the roadside along the Kubwa Expressway.

There are strong insinuations that she, too, might have fallen victim to “one-chance” hoodlums.

According to a post on X (formerly Twitter), the deceased was found at a separate location with documents suggesting she might have been a staff member of the FCT High Court.

Our correspondent could not independently verify her employment status at the court, as some staff members reached for comment said they were unaware of the incident.

The social media update included an image of the deceased and her identification card. It noted that her bag was discovered flung a short distance from her body — a pattern consistent with “one-chance” attacks where victims are robbed, assaulted, and thrown from moving vehicles.

Residents demand action

Residents have called on the police and other security agencies to live up to their responsibilities.

Mr. Ismail Umar, a Civil Servant based in Jabi, expressed worry that the police had yet to provide comprehensive details on the two incidents.

“In a normal society, the police would have commenced a thorough investigation and kept the public abreast of its progress,” he said.

Mrs. Agnes Attah, another resident, urged FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, to pay closer attention to security.

She noted that while there have been relative improvements in curbing crimes, more needs to be done.

“How can someone finish work in the afternoon and be killed in such a manner without any official response? It is not acceptable in a city like Abuja,” she said.

Nurses’ association condemns killings

Earlier on Tuesday, the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) condemned the killing of Chinemerem Chuwumeziem, describing it as an attack on the nursing profession and healthcare workers nationwide.

In a statement by the Chairman of the FCT Council of NANNM, Jama Medan, the association confirmed that Nurse Chinemerem was in active service at FMC Abuja.

“Having spent her day rendering selfless service to humanity, she closed from her shift and boarded a vehicle. Tragically, she never made it home,” the statement read. The association urged the FCT Minister to strengthen security around hospitals and major junctions, where healthcare workers board vehicles.

Police confirm incidents, begin investigation

The FCT Police Command has said preliminary investigations into the deaths of the two women suggest a link to the activities of “one-chance” gangs operating within the capital.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed yesterday that investigations are ongoing to unravel the circumstances surrounding the killings.

Our correspondent observed a joint patrol team at several strategic locations checking unpainted vehicles carrying passengers in an effort to curb the menace.
