What Nigerians should know about Canada’s new visa rules 2026

The FrontierThe FrontierFebruary 10, 2026 981 Minutes read0

•Canadian flag

Canada has introduced significant changes to its visa and immigration rules, affecting international students, job seekers, foreign workers and entrepreneurs looking to study, work or relocate to the country.

The updated policies mark a major shift in Canada’s immigration framework and are expected to ease access for qualified professionals and students while tightening some existing pathways, reports The Nation.

Here are the key changes applicants should note:

End of Start-Up Visa Applications

Canada is no longer accepting new permanent residence applications under the Start-Up Visa Programme.

However, applicants who already have a valid commitment certificate from a designated organisation may still apply until June 2026. Work permits under the programme are now restricted to existing holders only.

No Canadian Experience Requirement

Applicants are no longer required to present Canadian work experience under the Ontario Employment Standards Act. The change, which took effect on January 1, 2026, is aimed at removing barriers faced by foreign-trained professionals without prior work experience in Canada.

Faster Entry for Professionals

Under Ontario’s new “As of Right” framework, qualified professionals can begin working within 10 business days once their credentials are approved by the relevant regulatory body. The policy applies to professions such as healthcare, engineering, electrical work and architecture.

Rural Renewal Stream

Foreign workers seeking to settle in Alberta can now benefit from the Rural Renewal Stream, which allows rural communities to endorse candidates for local job offers. Successful applicants may also be nominated for permanent residence.

Study Permit Changes for Postgraduate Students

International students enrolled in public institutions for master’s or doctoral programmes are now exempt from providing a Provincial or Territorial Attestation Letter when applying for a study permit. The requirement was initially introduced to regulate study permit applications.

The changes are expected to simplify the process for qualified applicants and make Canada a more accessible destination for education and skilled migration.
