WHO warns Nigerians: No amount of alcohol is risk-free

The FrontierThe FrontierSeptember 27, 2025 1141 Minutes read0

The World Health Organisation (WHO) and other health authorities have warned that even small amounts of alcohol do contribute to the risk of cancer in the body organs.

Alcohol is now recognised as one of the top risk factors for cancer across Africa, with new studies showing strong links between drinking and diseases such as esophageal, breast, and liver cancer.

Experts note that the danger begins from the very first glass and increases the more a person drinks, reports Saturday Independent.

The U.S. Surgeon General recently underscored this point, highlighting that alcohol is tied to at least seven major types of cancer. He also called for warning labels on alcohol bottles to make the risks clear to consumers.

In Nigeria, medical professionals warn that the problem is worsening. Rising alcohol consumption, combined with late cancer detection and poor public awareness, is contributing to a growing health crisis.

What Nigerians should know:

Every drink carries risk.

Quitting or reducing alcohol brings quick health benefits such as better sleep, lower blood pressure, and improved liver function.

The safest choice is no alcohol at all.

The call to action is clear: authorities should enforce stricter regulations on alcohol sales and labeling, while health bodies and the media must ramp up awareness campaigns.

The message remains simple: there is no safe level of alcohol use and every alcohol-free day helps the body heal.
