Labour Party disowns sacked member Arabambi, denies link to Peter Obi credentials suit

The FrontierThe FrontierSeptember 14, 2026 572 Minutes read0

The Labour Party (LP) has disowned Abayomi Arabambi, declaring that he is no longer a member of the party and could not have instituted any court action against the academic institutions over Peter Obi’s credentials as an LP chieftain.

The party, in a statement issued today by its National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, said Arabambi’s purported identification in some media reports as an LP chieftain was misleading and unauthorised.

Arabambi had reportedly dragged the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) to court over Obi’s academic records.

Reacting to reports published by some mainstream media organisations, (not The Frontier), which described Arabambi as an LP chieftain, the party said it could no longer remain silent over what it described as a false representation of his relationship with the party.

The LP stressed that it would not comment on the substance of Arabambi’s legal action, particularly as Obi was no longer a member of the party, but insisted that Arabambi had ceased to belong to its fold.

According to the party, its National Executive Council (NEC), on March 18, 2026, suspended 25 members over alleged infractions bordering on anti-party activities.

The party said Arabambi was among those suspended, adding that the decision was subsequently ratified by its National Convention, the highest decision-making organ of the party, on April 28, 2026.

“Following the said ratification, the affected members ceased to be members of the party,” the LP declared.

It added that no organ of the party had since revisited or reversed the decision concerning the affected former members.

The party therefore maintained that Arabambi could not have instituted the suit in court as an LP member, having allegedly severed his relationship with the party months before the latest controversy.

The LP further warned that if Arabambi had presented himself as a chieftain or representative of the party, such representation was “entirely unauthorised” and could amount to impersonation.

The party disclosed that its lawyers were already reviewing the matter to determine possible legal action, including a petition to relevant law enforcement authorities.

The LP emphasised that its intervention was strictly aimed at correcting the impression that Arabambi remained a member or representative of the party.

It also cautioned that its clarification should not be interpreted as taking a position on the validity or otherwise of the claims contained in Arabambi’s suit against Obi.

The party said its statement was intended to place the controversy in proper perspective and establish Arabambi’s current status vis-à-vis the Labour Party.
