Abuja council election: PDP chairmanship aspirant, councillor, 203 others defect to APC

The FrontierThe FrontierNovember 28, 2025 521 Minutes read0

A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairmanship aspirant in Gwagwalada Area Council of the FCT, Alhaji Rabiu Saba, incumbent councillor representing Kutunku ward of the council, Murtala Hassan, alongside 203 members of the party have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Saba, who spoke on behalf of the decampees, said their decision was informed by the achievements of the outgoing administration of the APC under the leadership of Alhaji Abubakar Jibrin Giri, reports Daily Trust.

He said he and other PDP members saw the desire to pitch tent with the APC in order to enhance more development across the council, while assuring to work with the ruling party in order to ensure APC victory at the polls.

The Gwagwalada APC chapter chairman, Alhaji Ahmed Dan Baba, who received the decampees alongside the APC chairmanship candidate Alhaji Usman Yahaya, commended them for pitching their tent with the APC and assured that they will be treated equally like other APC members in the area.

On his part, the APC chairmanship candidate in Gwagwalada, Alhaji Usman Yahaya, also commended the defectors for taking a bold step to join the ruling APC in the area, saying such a decision was at the right time.

He assured that his administration would ensure that they are carried along if he is elected as chairman of the council during the February 21, 2026 election.

Our correspondent reports that the defection ceremony was attended by top APC stakeholders, including the APC State Chairman FCT, Alhaji Abdulmalik Usman, Chairman of the council, Abubakar Jibrin Giri, and Rt. Hon. Zakari Angulu Dobi, who welcomed the new members to the party.
