Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, songwriter, and producer, Tems has opened up about the deep struggle in her mind with self-rejection and how it affected her relationship with people who cared for her.

The alternative R&B and Afrobeats star who gained global recognition for her feature on Wizkid’s “Essence” and collaborated with Beyoncé, Drake, and Future admitted she got accustomed to rejecting herself, accepted it as a norm and was unable to receive love from others due to deep-seated self-rejection.

“I feel like I had been, in my mind, rejected so much that when I found people that finally accepted me, because I’m used, I was so used to rejecting myself, I couldn’t accept their love.

“I couldn’t accept that, their acceptance. I rejected myself before anybody even, so I was waiting for the rejection. I was expecting it. That was my normal daily life,” she stated while she discussed with popular radio, TV host and podcaster, Angie Martinez.

The “Love Me Jeje” singer’s mindset occupied her much so she believed she was unworthy to receive affection from people who genuinely wanted to show her love.

However, the Lagos born superstar who now resides in the UK emphasized the importance and worth of self-awareness and encouraged others to examine and understand their fears.

“I always encourage people to become aware.”

The 31-year-old Tems, born Temilade Openiyi, who calls her fanbase Rebel Gang, shot to stardom with her 2020 single “Damages” and has ever since kept the flag flying and conquering world stages.

One of the notable accolades she has to her name is receiving an Academy Award nomination for co-writing Rihanna’s “Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Her recent collaboration with British rapper and actor, David Orobosa Michael Omoregie professionally known as Dave on ‘Raindance,’ song which is getting attention on mainstream media has made headlines and left fans contemplating if Tems is dating Dave or in a relationship.
