SALLAH DAY TRAGEDY: 2 children, 3 others killed, 10 injured in Abeokuta–Lagos Expressway accident

Tragedy struck along the Abeokuta–Lagos Expressway today as five persons lost their lives and 10 others sustained grave injuries in a fatal lone crash at Iyana Egbado in Ogun State.

The accident, which involved a white Mazda E2000 bus with registration number KRD809XC, occurred at about 11:12 a.m., according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Sector Command.

In a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Route Commander Afolabi Odunsi, the crash was reported at 11:15 a.m., while FRSC rescue operatives from RS2.28 Itori Unit Command arrived at the scene within five minutes.

A total of 20 persons, he noted, were involved in the crash, including six adult males, 11 adult females, one male child, and two female children.

The FRSC confirmed that five victims died in the accident. The deceased comprised one adult male, two adult females, one male child, and one female child. Ten other victims suffered varying degrees of injuries, while five persons escaped unhurt.

He stated’ “The crash occurred at about 1112HRS and was reported at 1115HRS. FRSC rescue operatives from RS2.28 Itori Unit Command arrived at the scene at 1120HRS, with a response time of five minutes.

“The lone crash involved one white Mazda E2000 bus with registration number KRD809XC. A total of twenty persons were involved in the crash, comprising six adult males, eleven adult females, one male child, and two female children.

“Out of the twenty persons involved, five persons were killed, comprising one adult male, two adult females, one male child, and one female child. Ten persons sustained varying degrees of injuries, while five persons escaped unhurt.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the probable causes of the crash were speeding and overloading. The road was paved and weather condition at the time of the incident was cloudy.”

The FRSC explained that the injured victims were immediately taken to General Hospital, Ifo, and Oreofe Specialist Hospital, Itori, for medical treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the General Hospital Morgue, Ifo.

Reacting to the incident, the Ogun State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, sympathised with the families of the victims and urged motorists to avoid speeding, overloading, and other traffic violations capable of endangering lives.

He further advised drivers to strictly obey traffic rules and regulations, especially during the festive period, stressing that road safety remains a shared responsibility.
