Abia Assembly Majority Leader under fire, faces recall over corruption, violence allegations

The FrontierThe FrontierOctober 22, 2025 1392 Minutes read0

•Uchenna Okoro Kalu

Stakeholders in Arochukwu Constituency of Abia State have commenced the process of recall of their representative in the House of Assembly over allegations of corruption and violent conduct.

Hon. Uchenna Okoro Kalu, who is the representative of Arochukwu Constituency in Abia House of Assembly and also serves as the Majority Leader, has of late been embroiled in alleged reprehensible conduct said to be unbecoming of a legislator, reports Daily Independent.

He was said to have commissioned a nonfunctional borehole in Amaebem Ututu, two weeks ago and a week later engaged in a violent confrontation with another member of the Assembly over alleged sharing of money dished out to them by Governor Alex Otti as reported by Sahara Reporters.

Worried by these developments, Stakeholders in the Constituency met in Arochukwu on Tuesday and demanded the resignation of Hon. Okoro Kalu, or he faces a recall from the Assembly

Speaking under the agies of Arochukwu Equity Forum, they averred that “such a character is no longer fit to represent the good people of Arochukwu State Constituency in the Assembly’

The chairman of the forum, Chief Nicholas U Kalu and the Secretary, Hon. Lady Nnuona Okereke Izuogu, disclosed that they have activated the process of recall of the majority leader if he refuses to resign in the next one month.

According to the group, “the embarrassing conduct of our representative has brought shame to all of us. His ignoble conduct is antithetical to the decorum and integrity of a member of Parliament.”

They regretted that since the scandal broke out, Hon. Uchenna Okoro Kalu has not deemed it fit to apologise to the people of Ututu whom he fraudulently presented a non functional borehole after collecting the full money as a Constituency project.

They also noted that the majority leader has failed to address the scandal of publicly engaging in a violent physical altercation over the sharing of money.

“The denial by the member he attacked is an afterthought. It’s a sham damage control mechanism that can not fly. Hon Uchenna Okoro Kalu needs to come home to explain his embarrassing conduct to us.

They announced that consultation has started in all the wards in the Arochukwu local government area for the collection of signatures as a prelude to triggering off the recall process.

They also announced that they would send a petition to the anti corruption agencies to probe the allegations of corruption against the House of Assembly member.

But an aide to the lawmaker who preferred anonymity said the allegations were false, and an act of political victimisation.
