African Apostolic Church President is dead

•Late Apostle Atobatele

African Apostolic Church Worldwide has announced the death of its President and Spiritual Head, Apostle Joseph Ade Atobatele, on Sunday at age 105.

The church’s Board of Trustees and General Executive Council said this in a statement issued on its behalf by the church’s General Secretary, Rev. P.O. Ogunmodede.

According to the statement, Atobatele “peacefully answered the heavenly call” on April 19, marking the end of a long life dedicated to Christian ministry and leadership within the Apostolic movement.

Appointed president and spiritual head in 2007, Atobatele led the church for nearly two decades, overseeing what the organisation described as a period of spiritual renewal, administrative consolidation, and infrastructure growth. From its international headquarters in Oke-Oke Ajaye, Ekiti State, the church expanded its footprint across Nigeria and abroad, reports The Nation.

Widely referred to within the church as a “General of the Cross,” Atobatele was known for his emphasis on evangelism, prayer, and doctrinal adherence. The church credited his leadership with strengthening unity within its global community and guiding members through major challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic.

In its tribute, the General Executive Council described the late cleric as “a pillar of unity for the Body of Christ in Nigeria and a spiritual compass for the global African Apostolic family.”

“While we mourn the physical absence of our Father, we celebrate the monumental impact of a life that was truly spent for God,” the statement read. “He finished his course with honour.”

The church has opened condolence registers at its international headquarters in Oke Ajaye, as well as at regional centres across Nigeria and overseas, including its parish in Omuo-Ekiti.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced at a later date.

The church called on members and the public to keep the family of the late apostle and the wider church community in their prayers.
