Amusan returns as Nigeria’s number 1, overtakes Ofili

•Tobi Amusan

World record holder in the 100m hurdles, Nigeria and Africa’s number One, Tobi Amusan, has made a triumphant return to the top 100 of the World Athletics women’s overall rankings.

After slipping out of the elite group last year for the first time since the ranking system was introduced in 2019, when she debuted at No. 96, Amusan has surged back to 88th in the world with a ranking score of 1366, reports Saturday Guardian.

Her resurgence is powered by a string of impressive performances, including two 12.45-second runs and a season’s best of 12.24s at the 2025 Paris Diamond League, where she finished second behind Grace Stark. That time is her fastest since setting the world record of 12.12s at Oregon, USA, in 2022.

Amusan’s rise has also seen her reclaim the title of Nigeria’s highest-ranked female athlete, overtaking Favour Ofili, who held that distinction at the end of 2024 but has now dropped to 175th.

In the 100m hurdles discipline, Amusan has climbed back into the top 10, currently sitting at No. 9, after ending last year in 13th place. With her form peaking ahead of major championships, Amusan appears to be on track to replicate or even surpass her stellar 2022 season, when she finished as the world’s top sprint hurdler and ranked fifth overall among women.
