Blackout, water scarcity hit varsity as exams approach

The FrontierThe FrontierJuly 2, 2024 2721 Minutes read0

Power failure and water scarcity have hit the University of Ilọrin (Unilorin), Kwara State, a few days before the students begin their semester examinations.

A student said, “There is no light, no water, and exams are approaching. This is not the time to be dealing with these issues.

“Many students are leaving campus because of this, but what about those with nowhere to go off campus? I haven’t experienced a semester like this since I entered this school,” reports Daily Trust.

Another student described the situation as worrisome, adding that it had led to very poor hygiene.

Ode, another student, claimed that the problem got worse after the new electricity tariff which shot Unilorin’s bill to over N250m monthly.

A parent said, “Imagine a hostel that houses 700 students with just one tap and no student is allowed to fetch more than a bucket of water; they need monitoring.”

The school’s Students Union Government (SUG) President, Ologundudu Joseph Adesunkanmi, who confirmed the situation, told our correspondent on phone, “We are working on it. I am currently with the vice chancellor. Maybe we can talk later.”

The university’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Kunle Akogun, when contacted, said he would find out about the situation.

However, another official said, “Our vice chancellor is student-friendly and I’m sure lots of proactive measures are ongoing to address the situation.”
