•Fire

An early morning fire at a self-contained apartment in Rumuworlu Street, Eneka, Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State has allegedly killed an eighth months old baby.

Eyewitnesses said the mother of the baby, in a desperate attempt to rescue her children, was severely injured after she ran into the burning house, reports Daily Independent.

The eyewitnesses added that despite the efforts of the mother who succeeded in rescuing her two-year-old child, the eight months old baby could not be saved from the raging flames.

The mother, who fainted after escaping the burning building, was rushed to the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) by the Rivers State Emergency Medical Service. Her condition remains unknown as at the time of this report.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, as it was gathered that the scene of the fire has been cordoned off, and emergency responders are working to determine the origin of the blaze.

Neighbours and eyewitnesses describe the scene as chaotic, with flames engulfing the apartment and thick smoke billowing into the air.

One of the eyewitnesses who preferred anonymity said, “It was like a nightmare. The mother was screaming, and the flames were so intense. It’s a miracle anyone made it out alive.”

The Police and other authorities are yet to comment on the development.
