•Scene of the train derailment

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), has commenced investigation into the yesterday’s train derailment along Warri–Itakpe corridor.

A source close to the bureau, told our correspondent that the Director-General, NSIB, Alex Badeh Jnr., has led a team of investigators to the scene of the train accident, reports The Guardian.

It was learnt that the Managing Director of Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr Kayode Opeifa was also part of the team.

The investigation would further bring to light the immediate and remote causes of the derailment and give appropriate recommendations on how to prevent similar future accident in the sub-sector.

The source said: “The Director-General of NSIB, has left for the scene of the accident this morning with other investigators from the bureau. Also, the Managing Director of NRC, Opeifa was with the DG.

“As you are aware, the NSIB does not encourage rumours. Our investigation would reveal what happened and how to mitigate it in the future.”

No fewer than four passengers were killed yesterday following the derailment of a train on the Warri–Itakpe Train Service.

While confirming the derailment, the NRC said that emergency response teams and relevant authorities were immediately deployed to the scene to attend to the situation and providing necessary assistance.

The NRC said in a statement: “The Nigerian Railway Corporation confirms that an incident involving the Warri–Itakpe Train Service (WITS) occurred today.

“Emergency response teams and relevant authorities are currently at the scene attending to the situation and providing necessary assistance.”
