Burna Boy, Shakira, BTS, others wow fans at historic FIFA World Cup final halftime show

The FrontierThe FrontierJuly 19, 2026 532 Minutes read0

FIFA ushered in a new era of entertainment today as the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final featured the tournament’s first-ever official halftime show, transforming football’s biggest match into a global music spectacle.

The historic production took place during halftime of the World Cup final between defending champions Argentina and Spain at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, marking the first time FIFA introduced a Super Bowl-style halftime performance at the tournament’s showpiece event.

Curated by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin in partnership with Global Citizen, the approximately 11-minute show formed part of an extended halftime interval and was produced by Live Nation and Done + Dusted, with veteran live-event director Hamish Hamilton overseeing the production, reports AFP.

The performance also supported the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, an initiative aiming to raise $100 million to expand access to education and football opportunities for children worldwide. Organisers said participating artistes volunteered their performances in support of the campaign.

Global music icons Madonna, Shakira, BTS and Justin Bieber headlined the show, joined by Nigerian Grammy-winning singer Burna Boy, renowned conductor Gustavo Dudamel, musicians from the New York Philharmonic and Venezuela’s Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra, the PS22 Chorus, Uganda’s Ghetto Kids, singer Emmanuel Kelly, and characters from Sesame Street and The Muppets.

One of the standout moments came as Shakira and Burna Boy reunited to perform “Dai Dai,” the official song of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following their appearance at the tournament’s opening ceremony.

BTS thrilled fans with a performance of their global hit “Dynamite,” while Justin Bieber delivered a slower solo performance. Madonna brought a high-energy set that formed one of the show’s defining moments, as orchestral performances, choral arrangements, dance ensembles and family-friendly appearances reinforced the production’s message of unity and hope.

Designed as a fast-paced “mega-mix”, the show featured rapid stage transitions, elaborate visuals and carefully choreographed performances on a specially protected playing surface to preserve the pitch.

The halftime spectacle formed part of a wider entertainment programme surrounding the World Cup final. Before kick-off, the tournament concluded with a star-studded closing ceremony featuring performances by Post Malone, Swae Lee, Jennifer Hudson, Robbie Williams, Nicole Scherzinger and Laura Pausini, alongside appearances by internet personality IShowSpeed and actor Tom Cruise.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup Final marked the conclusion of the first 48-team tournament, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

FIFA’s decision to introduce a halftime show represented a significant departure from World Cup tradition, blending football with large-scale live entertainment while advancing the tournament’s global education initiative. The move generated widespread discussion among fans and observers, with reactions ranging from praise for its star-studded production and international appeal to debate over its departure from the competition’s traditional format.
